Mastery Through Your Unique Ability

“To become a true master at what you do, you cannot merely be an expert at something.

Expertise is the ability to do something well. Mastery is the ability to do something uniquely well.

A master is someone who can never be replicated, they can only be learned from.

Embracing your unique ability is how you develop mastery as a person, and become the highest and most genuine version of yourself.” – Dan Sullivan, author of 10x Is Easier Than 2x

I think there is just so much wisdom in this little passage from my reading of 10x Is Easier Than 2x this week. Sullivan is right – we need to put ourselves into a position where we cannot be replaced.

Now, I know this sounds a bit contrary to the traditional business mindset that asserts that everyone can be replaced; that systems and processes in your business are the true indicators of success. But the reality of it is that when someone achieves mastery, they are living out their life’s purpose and are doing the work God has given them the unique gifts to do. And when a business attempts to backfill their position, they can never truly be replaced. A deep and unbridgeable hole will be left by their absence.

We should all strive to achieve mastery in this way: by leveraging our unique ability to become irreplaceable, indispensable.

When you identify your own unique ability, and start moving in the direction of mastery, you will see the following come to fruition:

  1. Increased Confidence: No one wants to follow someone who isn’t sure about who they are or where they are going. People want to follow a confident leader. When you are operating in the sphere of your unique ability and moving toward mastery, you are going to exude confidence. You are going to look around and feel that it is impossible to replace you; people can only learn from you.

  2. Incredible Focus: You won’t have time to do the 80% tasks while you are pursuing mastery; you will be forced to stay focused on your top 20% tasks and expand that part of your expertise. Focus is where people can gain momentum in their deep work.

  3. Clarity of Personal Standards: Not only will you start to operate by very clear personal standards that are higher than most, but other people will be very aware of your standards. They will see you operating at that level and if they choose to work with you, they will understand and appreciate your high standards. And even though your high standards may be intimidating to them, they are going to be okay with them because they respect you as their leader. You will ensure your team is supported and raised up to your standards, as well.

  4. Strengthening of Your Personal Brand: Not only will people within your company know clearly what your brand is, your clients and all the people in your life will know it. Your brand and reputation will begin to proceed you – even people who have only heard about you will be very aware of your brand, and may even be able to speak to who you are even though they have never actually personally met you. It is your mastery and the ability to be someone that other people cannot replicate that makes you unique.

What is it that is your unique ability?

If you focus on it and refine it, you will become a master that no one can replicate.

Make the mastery of your unique ability your top 20% so you can pursue deep work and actually create those standards and production that set you above others. Your high standards will help you achieve greater confidence, focus, brand strength, and true personal joy.
