Challenges Are Opportunities to Lead Yourself

Some days and weeks in our work life challenge us more than others. I am in the middle of one of those more challenging weeks right now. And I am fortified by my commitment to viewing these challenges as opportunities to grow and do bigger and better things.

Simultaneously, I am in my revision phase of the manuscript development process for my own book this week. And so, I find myself needing to take a big swig of my own medicine here, per say, and take the advice I offer to the future readers of my book.

Every time you are faced with a challenging decision in your business, you need to step back and revisit your own vision and purpose and use those as a framework to evaluate why you are doing things as you are presently. Separate yourself from other influences and external factors; then, spend time pondering your plans for how you will make your vision a reality. A challenge could be an opportunity that forces you to reset, or to change directions, or to ante-up and go “all in.”

As a leader, you walk around all day, every day, making sure your team is reminded of the vision – the vision you have for them as an individual on your team and for the business at large. And you do that day-in and day-out because you are a great leader. It is the responsibility of a great leader to remind their teams about the vision, purpose, and the plan(s) to get there. But how often do you devote time to consider these things for yourself? How often do you spend individual, uninterrupted time thinking about these important things for yourself and your future? I have found that my strongest moments of creative thinking come when I am challenged.

After all, as a leader, you control the trajectory of building your business, your team, your future. Every time you are challenged with a difficult decision or presented with an extreme opportunity, rather than succumbing to the pressure of needing to make a quick decision, take the time to reflect on why you are doing what you are doing. Really force yourself to ponder: what is my vision for the outcome? And what is my plan to get there? And remind yourself of all of those things continually so you can make the best decisions for your life, for your team, and for your business every single time.
