Using Failure For Good
The acceptance of our own failure(s) is not easy. It is, in fact, often painful. But the pain and acceptance doesn’t ease by choosing to never do something again. We cannot let the fear of failure rule us.
Failure stings; but it can be a motivator, too. Failure has to be positioned in your mind in such a way so you can make use of it, rather than letting it bring you or hold you down. I believe everything can be used for good – even all the painful, terrible, unfair evils of this world. But this requires you to make the decision to explore failure in this way.
Recently, I came across a motivational clip of Matthew McConaughey saying, “If life was nothing but green lights – if we didn’t have yellows and reds, things that make us pause, hardships, crises, failures, times for introspection – then what the hell would it all be for? We need the yellows and the reds! That’s how we evolve. That’s how we achieve some ascension to our being. I would say to my 15-year-old self, GO FAIL MORE!” It is through failure that we discover our strengths, uncover our weaknesses, and learn valuable lessons that shape us unto stronger, more resilient versions of ourselves.
So if you find yourself feeling the fear of failure holding you down, remember these truths:
Don’t grip life too tight. You’ll get whiplash if you live life that way. Hold life with an open hand and seek to enjoy the moment you are in. I tell my kids this all the time: we don’t have to be successful to go to Heaven; we just have to love. Be careful how you judge your life and determine success. Love is king, and when you spread enough of it, you’ll enjoy your life so much more. Success will follow.
I once heard Tim Tebow say, “Passion is the fuel source that never runs out.” The goal is progress, not perfection. True – sometimes it requires a lot of time and effort to see growth. And if you are not working in an area that you are passionate about, you’ll feel the stress of what people refer to as burnout. Ask yourself: Am I where I need to be, where I want to be? Passion has a powerful way of working the sting and memories of failure out of your system. Lean into your passion.
Challenge yourself to be fearless and courageous enough to push your life in the direction fueled by love and passion.
